Walk & Talk with 5 photographer
Change of perspectives, wanted
Thursday 06th of September 2018
The relationship to reality is marked not just by opposites but by subtle nuances.
Realism (Lat.: Realis, English: real, true) is a term expressing the relationship between men towards reality. It is generally said that photography depicts reality. Reality however, is a certainty that one can not argue with and that does not follow any individual perceptions or desires.
Most commonly we feel certain about what to think, like or dislike and what to believe in. Though in times of mass media and global news, it can be incredibly overwhelming to recognize importance and to filter right from wrong. It is difficult to follow and comprehend events like the refugee crisis, social inequality or the climate change in their full scale and complexity. As one of many possible reactions towards uncertainty one can observe movements of polarisation and extremism within Europe.
Nevertheless, with an eye to those political, ecological, economical and social events we are reminded that a world of black and white does not exist. Neither do content and background of contemporary photography reveal themselves at first glance. Cité de l'image exhibits seven photographic positions on the topic ‚De tous les noirs et blancs', offering us nuanced stories about interrelation, spaces in between and multiple facets of realities.
In conversation with Christian Mosar the photographers Olaf Otto Becker, Kati Bruder, Sophie Hatier, Mårten Lange and Henrik Spohler will tell about their works - and how they translate their concerns and motives, personal observations, individual experiences and researches into photography, into images which wish to open spaces, communicate insights and evoke empathy, invite the spectator to question contents and to encourage a discourse.
