FOTO CLIERF is a contemporary photography festival dedicated to visual culture, creative innovation and social dialogue. The festival centres on exhibitions, interdisciplinary projects and encounters between artists, the public and the public space.

Particular emphasis is placed on the collaboration between the Cité de l’image Clervaux and the CNA (Centre national de l’audiovisuel), which pool their expertise and networks to promote photography and visual media within an international and regional context. This collaboration creates a platform for artistic exchange, innovative outreach formats and new perspectives on contemporary visual culture.

FOTO CLIERF sees itself as a place of inspiration and cultural diversity, where documentary, experimental and socially relevant works are presented. The festival strengthens the dialogue between artists and the public and contributes to the visibility of photography as a significant contemporary form of expression.

Since 2025, the participating institutions have been working together to develop this festival. The original idea arose from a desire to place greater emphasis on the significance of the Cité de l’Image and the CNA, whilst at the same time raising the international profile of the photographic legacy of The Family of Man. The festival therefore deliberately focuses on photography as an artistic, documentary and social medium.

With Clervaux as the venue, the choice naturally fell on a location closely linked to the world-famous The Family of Man collection. The festival thus sees itself not only as a cultural event, but also as a platform for photographic exchange, contemporary visual culture and international encounters. The aim is to establish Clervaux in the long term as a key centre for photography and visual culture in Luxembourg and beyond.

This year, Luxembourg Art Week offers a special platform for presenting this joint project. With its focus on photography this year, it provides the ideal setting to introduce the festival’s vision to a wider audience for the first time, whilst also offering a preview of the upcoming edition. Participation enables the involved institutions to showcase their collaboration, forge new international connections and give a taste of the project’s photographic focus in the run-up to the event.
