As part of a partnership agreement between the municipality of Stilfs (Italy) and the municipality of Clervaux, concluded within the framework of the ‘Stilfs - Raconter la résilience’ project, Clervaux - Cité de l'image is pleased to welcome South Tyrolean artist Karin SCHMUCK to the Ermitage artists' residence for the next two months. She will have the opportunity to live and work in this inspiring environment. The residence offers her a space for creative exchange and artistic development in the midst of the impressive nature of the Luxembourg Ardennes.
Description of the project for Clervaux - Cité de l'image
For years, the artist has been exploring borders and their meaning. Her long-term project World's Ends (since 2018) takes her to places that were considered the ‘end of the world’ in ancient times. These places are often located on the borders of Europe. She travels there, conducts extensive research and connects history, personal experiences and current themes on site. Each year, she creates a new cycle of works with an exhibition.
During the coronavirus pandemic, she began the project ‘Limitis’. She travelled through her native region, the province of Bolzano, to explore borders and passages in the landscape.
As part of her residency, she wants to explore the border triangle between Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. Walking along borders, taking notes, photos and videos. She is particularly interested in cultural diversity: the municipality of Clervaux has residents of 88 different nationalities. She plans to get in touch with different communities, record their stories on audio and video and combine them with her photographic work.

Workshop 17.05.2025
As part of Luxembourg Museum Days (LUMUDA), Karin Schmuck offered a photography workshop.
The workshop focused on the immediate environment and encouraged participants to refine their own view of their surroundings. Weather permitting, we will work outdoors in the heart of Clervaux, where participants will capture their personal impressions and their relationship with the place through photography. Together, we will explore and question the term ‘photography’ and push it to its limits and beyond in a playful way.
The workshop is structured around small tasks, accompanied by short discussion sessions during which the ‘results’ are presented and discussed.
The main objective is to encourage participants to explore the multiple possibilities of an individual visual language.
